His detractors called him bombastic and impudent. The Apaches called him Nantan, “Boss with the High Forehead.” Wyatt Earp called him a friend.
As a US Army Observer-Sergeant, he was one of the nation’s first weathermen.
As an Apache Indian Agent, he was the only man to ever capture Geronimo, one of the most infamous Apache renegades, at gunpoint. He was instrumental in establishing Indian self-rule at the San Carlos Apache reservation, a bench-mark which was later adopted for all Indian reservations.
As the Mayor of Tombstone, he could handle a pistol or a town council meeting with equal dexterity. He was instrumental in building the foundation for the “Town Too Tough To Die.”
A contemporary of Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday, John Clum lived an exciting and adventurous life, the first 30 years of which is captured here in “Nantan: Volume 1.
