John P. Clum - Genealogy
Over the course of the six-or-so years it took to complete both volumes of Nantan, several people have approached me with claims to knowing Clum’s ancestry going back as far as the 1500’s.
The farther one travels back in time, the sketchier the records become and the more difficult it is to accurately track a person’s lineage. That said, in Chapter 1 of Volume 1, I provided what I feel is fairly factual information about the Clum lineage going back to the birth of John Clum’s grandfather in 1731. Also provided was, what I believe to be correct information about the lineage of John Clum’s mother, Elizabeth Van Deusen, following back to the arrival in 1636 of her great, great, great, great grandfather, Abraham Pietersen Van Deursen.
It is also interesting to note that the Clum name, like so many others, went through some rather dramatic changes over the years. Also given are: Chlum, van Clum, von Clum, de Clum, Klumm, Klumb, Klomp, Kloom, Clumb, Clomb, and Glomp
In Volume 1, I noted that I was not sure of the origin of John Clum’s middle name; Philip, suggesting that it may have been taken from an uncle, the brother of his father, William. New information suggests that its origins may be derived from a much earlier ancestor, a Johan or Johannes Philip Klumm (who opted to be known by his middle instead of his first name) in the early 1700’s.
What can be provided with some real certainty is the Clum lineage moving forward from his parents. Provided on the succeeding pages is the Clum lineage as we know it today.
